What Is A Cake Batter Hummus Recipe

Remember licking the spoon when you were a kid and your mom made a boxed-cake mix? I do. It was before concerns about raw eggs.

There’s just something about a simple vanilla cake mix and this dessert hummus recipe does the best it can at mimicking the flavors of a cake mix, without all of the unnecessary sugar.

It can be served with biscuits, pretzels, or sliced fruit. This hummus pairs well with sliced apples in particular. I like to use some festive sprinkles (for birthday cake hummus) on the top, but dairy-free or sugar-free chocolate chips also work.

Ingredients For Cake Batter Hummus

birthday cake hummus

Although it’s possible to make “hummus” with something other than chickpeas, that is the traditional base. The goal here, and with all dessert hummus recipes, is to find a way to make the hummus taste lest like chickpeas and more like a sweet treat – one that can even trick finicky kids.

  • Flour: Plain white flour works the best to get the texture of cake.
  • Baking powder: Another way to make the hummus taste like a cake.
  • Salt: I add a touch of salt to every dessert recipe to offset the sweetness.
  • Honey: If you are vegan, you can use maple syrup
  • Pure vanilla extract
  • Almond butter: Instead of tahini, which is normal in a hummus recipe
  • Milk: You can use whole or low-fat milk. If you are vegan or dairy-free you can use a milk alternative or coconut milk. Because these milk alternatives tend to be sweeter, adjust the amount of honey or maple syrup. Add a bit less, and you can always add more.

How To Make Cake Batter Hummus

cale batter hummus

Blend the flour, salt, and baking powder in a small bowl. Add the honey, vanilla extract, almond butter, and milk to a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Do the same with the dry ingredients. Add the chickpeas a little at a time until blended smooth.

Taste and adjust any ingredients to make it sweeter, generally by adding more honey or vanilla. If you are not sugar-free, then add just a sprinkle of white or brown sugar if needed to sweeten to your taste.

Blend until the hummus reaches the right consistency while scraping the sides of the blender or food processor. If more moisture is needed to make it smooth add milk, milk alternative, or a tablespoon of warm water.
